Ofem Ubi’s artistic practice is an interworking of poetry and visual art. As a poet and artist living and working in Nigeria, Ofem Ubi’s oeuvres highlight his interest in the subject of memory and its manifestation beyond the boundaries of the written word.
Ofem Ubi’s significant projects include “the last time I called” (2023), a project on grief and loss as expressions of remembrance and nostalgia. “the last time I called” culminated in the production of a pamphlet and an exhibition hosted at the Guest Artist Space Foundation in 2022. Equally, back on home soil (2023), sequel to “the last time I called”, saw Ofem Ubi expand his inquiry into remembrance and score an exhibition and film screening at the Fringe of Colour Film Festival, Edinburgh in 2023. Other important works of his include “Velvet” (2020), in which age is personalized as a storekeeper of memory; “Sweet Potato” (2021), a film showcasing memorabilia from the artist’s childhood and teenage hood; “Collage” (2025), a poetry installation of memory, written by both the poet and the audience, establishing collective authorship.
Ofem Ubi is a 2024 Prince Claus Seed Award recipient and an alumnus of the G.A.S. Foundation. His ‘Family Tree’ is one of ten aural creative productions in the Volume 1 of Artangel’s “Earth Rising”, a concept album in which artists, writers, poets and musicians hold a mirror to humanity. Ofem Ubi continues to create work that bears the past and recollections of the same within itself.
