In the 1970s, the Golden Record aimed to introduce humanity to extraterrestrial life. Half a century later, Artangel presents Earth Rising — a concept album that introduces humanity to itself.

Released across streaming platforms on 20 June 2025 and composed entirely of new audio works, Earth Rising, Volume I is a cross-section of the human experience, expressing our enduring will to survive, our tangled relationship with love, and our drive to create.

The Golden Record was an audio/visual time capsule of Earth, portraying carefully selected sounds and images to other life forms across interstellar space. Earth Rising keeps its intentions on the ground, exploring the complexity and depth of what it means to be human.

Featuring poets Nayomi Apsara, Porsha Olayiwola and Ofem Ubi; musicians Max Cooper and Plumm; writer Michel Nieva; and visual artists Emilia Álvarez, Evan Ifekoya, Leo Robinson and Sebastián Riffo Valdebenito.

International residency partners for Volume I are Green Papaya Art Projects (Philippines), Theertha (Sri Lanka), Organhaus (China), Guest Artists Space (G.A.S) Foundation / Yinka Shonibare Foundation (Nigeria/ UK), and URRA (Argentina).
