YOU GOOD? highlights Mental Health in the creative community, and its relation to water. It visually follows a black writer who commits an ice-bath ritual, having been aware of his trauma and anxiety.
Recognising the soothing effect of ice; its ability to reduce anxiety, boost mood, improve the immune system… he breaks it to bits ahead of his every writing session and when it becomes unbearable to continue writing, dashes into the bathtub and submerges himself in the blue until he feels better.
Anxiety, depression & trauma are common pains and are not identified by ordinary appearance or face value glances. We walk around screaming on the inside looking to be held, seen or even asked the question, “you good?”
Narrowing this topic to the creative community makes it no less important as art and creativity -though tremendously rewarding- takes a major toll on our mental health, especially when we do not have the right tools to tackle the pressure, low esteem, confusion, blocks, impostor syndrome e.t.c when they come.
YOU GOOD? Is a call to artists to find what tools and avenues helps them in their creative process and keeps them level headed to create the magic they keep making. You only make magic when you’re sane and clear eyed. It also admonishes them to take breaks when they need to and understand their artistic routine, thus helping them to know what is beneficial and what isn’t.
The work also serves as a question tag, leaving the audience with a bag of thoughts to push them into assessing themselves. So, YOU GOOD?
